Appetite changes as we get older. Cooking takes more effort, eating alone is less enjoyable and sometimes food simply tastes less good. Yet eating well matters more than ever now: it gives strength, helps recovery and lowers the risk of falling.
Signs of malnutrition
- You lose weight without meaning to, or your clothes feel looser.
- You have less appetite or skip meals.
- You feel tired and less strong than before.
Do you recognise this in yourself or a loved one? Discuss it with your GP, who can refer you to a dietitian. A dietitian is partly covered by basic health insurance.
Tips to keep eating well
- Eat smaller portions more often throughout the day.
- Choose protein-rich foods, such as dairy, eggs, fish and pulses.
- Drink enough, even when you are not thirsty.
- If you can, go to the market yourself: choosing fresh vegetables builds an appetite.
How home care helps
Our carers see how you are doing at every visit. We keep an eye on your weight and appetite, help with meals where needed and consult you and your GP if we notice something. That way, eating well stays part of your day.
