Living safely at home for longer: 10 practical tips

Most people want to live in their own home for as long as possible. That is very achievable, especially with a few sensible adjustments. These ten tips help you or your loved one stay at home safely and comfortably.

Safe at home

  1. Remove trip hazards. Loose rugs, cables and door thresholds are a common cause of falls. Run cables along the wall and secure rugs or remove them.
  2. Make sure there is good lighting. Especially on the stairs, in the hallway and on the way to the toilet. A night light or a lamp with a motion sensor helps at night.
  3. Make the bathroom safe. A non-slip mat, a shower chair and grab rails by the toilet and shower provide support and confidence.
  4. Keep frequently used items within easy reach. Then you do not need to climb on a stool or bend down low.
  5. Consider an alarm system. A personal alarm or a phone that is always within reach gives peace of mind to you and your family.

Staying healthy and active

  1. Keep moving. A daily walk or simple exercises keep your muscles and balance strong. Ask your GP or physiotherapist which exercises suit you.
  2. Keep track of your medication. A weekly pill organiser or pharmacy medication roll helps prevent mistakes. Have your medication reviewed regularly by your GP or pharmacy, particularly if you take several medicines.
  3. Eat and drink enough. Eating well and drinking enough give you energy and help with recovery.

Not on your own

  1. Stay in touch with others. Family, neighbours, a club or a local activity: contact with others is good for your mood and your health.
  2. Ask for help in good time. Do you notice that everyday tasks are becoming harder? Do not wait too long. With the right support you can stay independent for longer.

When is home care a good idea?
