Safely through autumn: 7 tips for living at home in Voorburg and the surrounding area

The days are getting shorter, it gets dark earlier and the pavements are slippery with leaves or rain. For many older people, autumn is a season when living at home needs a little extra attention. With a few simple adjustments you can stay safe and comfortable in your own home through October and November. In this article we share practical tips, especially for residents of Voorburg, Leidschendam and the surrounding area.

1. Make sure there is good lighting, inside and out

Falls often happen in half-light: in the hallway, on the stairs or when getting up at night. Fit a motion-sensor lamp in the hallway and by the front door. A small night light in the bedroom and bathroom makes a real difference. Check that the outside light works too, so you can see the pavement clearly when you come home.

2. Keep the pavement and doorstep clear

Wet leaves are slippery. Ask a neighbour, a relative or the council to keep the pavement in front of your door clean. Put down a sturdy non-slip doormat and make the doorstep clearly visible, for example with a strip in a contrasting colour.

3. Choose the right shoes

Closed shoes with a grip sole give more stability than slippers or slip-ons. Wear them indoors too if you feel less steady. Do you use a walker? Have the brakes and wheels checked before winter.

4. Keep moving, even when the weather is poor

Less daylight often means less activity. These are exactly the months when it matters to keep your muscles and balance in shape. A short daytime walk, a few exercises at the kitchen counter or a stroll around the neighbourhood with a companion: every bit helps. Feel free to ask your carer which exercises suit you.

5. Watch the heating and the air in the house

A well-heated home is pleasant, but air that is too dry causes dry skin and a dry throat. Place a small bowl of water near the radiator and air the rooms every day. Also check the batteries in your smoke alarm and, if you have a gas heater, your carbon monoxide alarm.

6. Plan for the dark days

Autumn can feel quiet and lonely, especially when visitors come less often. Set a fixed weekly appointment: coffee with a neighbour, a phone call with a grandchild, an activity at the community centre. Structure and contact keep the day bright, even when it gets dark early.

7. Keep your medication and appointments in order

The change of season often brings the flu jab and check-ups at the GP. Hang an overview on the fridge or use a weekly pill organiser. That way you, and your family, know exactly where you stand.
