A lot changes after an amputation. Even so, many people with a leg prosthesis go back to the market, visit friends or take a short walk. Good care at home helps to keep this up, especially in the first period after rehabilitation.
How home care helps
- Skin and residual limb: checking daily for pressure spots, redness or small wounds, and caring for them properly.
- Putting it on and taking it off: help with the liner and the prosthesis, especially when you are tired or in pain.
- Personal care: help with washing, showering and dressing, safely and at your own pace.
- Noticing changes: we notice when something changes and consult you, your GP or your rehabilitation doctor.
Working with your care team
The prosthesis is made and adjusted by an orthopaedic technician, in consultation with your rehabilitation doctor and physiotherapist. We follow their advice, so you keep practising at home in the same way as during rehabilitation.
Reimbursement
A leg prosthesis is covered by basic health insurance; the compulsory excess may apply. Personal care and nursing at home are often covered by the Health Insurance Act or the Wlz, or you arrange them with a personal budget (pgb).
